How to Make a Shaker Card (Even If You’ve Never Tried One!)

Shaker cards look impressive, but they’re surprisingly simple to make. With just a few supplies and a little creativity, you can create an interactive card filled with sparkle, confetti, or tiny surprises like these die cut flowers, that shake and move when tilted.

Whether you’re making birthday cards, holiday greetings, or just something fun “just because,” this quick guide will walk you through the basics.

What You’ll Need

  • Cardstock (for the card base and front panel)
  • Clear plastic (acetate or packaging plastic works great)
  • Foam adhesive strips
  • Shaker filler (sequins, glitter, beads, confetti, etc.)
  • Mulitpurpose Liquid Glue
  • Scissors or a craft knife
  • Optional: dies, stamps, or embellishments

Step‑by‑Step Shaker Card Instructions

  1. Create the Card Base
Fold a piece of cardstock in half to form your card.

  2. Cut a Window
Cut a shape or opening in a second piece of cardstock. This will be the front of your shaker card. I just used an exacto knife to cut the opening.

  3. Add the Clear Window
Glue or use Tear 'n Tape a piece of window sheet to the back of the window opening.

  4. Build the Shaker Wall
Line the back of the window piece with Foam Adhesive Strips, creating a sealed frame.

  5. Fill It Up
Sprinkle your shaker elements onto the card base, inside the foam frame.

  6. Seal the Card
Carefully press the window piece onto the card base, sealing the shaker inside.

  7. Decorate
Add sentiments, stickers, stamps, or embellishments to finish your card.

Tips for Success

  • Make sure there are no gaps in the foam tape so nothing escapes.
  • Use lightweight fillers so they move easily when shaken.
  • Test the “shake” before fully pressing everything down.

Final Thoughts

Shaker cards are a fun way to add motion and surprise to handmade cards, and once you make one, you’ll want to create more. Change the window shape, filler, or theme to match any occasion.

Happy crafting—and don’t forget to give your card a good shake when you’re done! 🎉
